Start with the evidence
A comparison is more than a promise of change.
Ibogaine is discussed in observational work, case reports, and small studies, but robust randomised controlled trial evidence is absent. A careful starting point is the broader Denmark-focused ibogaine context: legal status, safety questions, treatment setting, and what remains unknown all affect how any comparison should be read.
01
Documented harms
Published reports describe serious cardiac events and deaths in association with ibogaine exposure. Cardiac electrical effects, neurological concerns, psychiatric effects, and interactions with other substances are central—not peripheral—to the risk picture.
02
Limited certainty
Case reports and observational findings can identify concerns and generate hypotheses, but they cannot settle comparative safety or long-term outcomes. Absence of a strong trial base is a material uncertainty.
03
Established options
Methadone, buprenorphine, and psychosocial support are part of established opioid-treatment pathways. Their use is supported by structured clinical practice, monitoring, and a substantially larger evidence base.
